Summary:The Allies invaded mainland Italy on September 3, 1943, by General Harold Alexander’s 15th Army Group during WWII. This operation was the follow up of the successful invasion of Sicily during the Italian Campaign. The main invasion force landed around Salerno on the western coast, this was named Operation Avalanche. Two supporting operations took place in Calabria and Taranto (Operations Baytown and Slapstick).
Operation Avalanche, Italians warned Allies over a loud speaker in english saying, "Come on in and give up. We have you covered", nonetheless the Allie troops fought.
