What advancements have been made in the United States in terms of the rights for women and African Americans since the 1960s?

The first step in advancing the African American way of life, came after they were freed from slavery in 1860. However, the blacks then became segregated and were not treated the same as the whites both socially, politically and with their jobs and education. In 1954 the supreme court ruled to desegregate schools. Lyndon Johnson proposed the Civil Rights Bill during his presidency. Johnson also issued the the Voting Rights Act which outlawed literacy tests for the blacks that they needed to pass to be able to vote in an election. The Race riots, Malcolm X, and the Black Panther Party all were people and organizations trying to advance black rights.
In the 1900 NEW ZEALAND!! Was the only country that allowed women to vote. in 1975 129 countries gave women the right to vote, but they were still discriminated with differences in education and pay. Margaret Thatcher was the first women to be elected as the head of state in Europe--Great Britain. As well Indira Ghandi became the first Female president in India. She pushed to end poverty and create women's rights in India. The invention of birth control gave women the right to choose between starting a family or getting an education and working. The concept of equal pay became an issue after women got the right to pay. Women felt that this wouldn't change until more women got into politics and could change that. Although the USA has not had a female president yet, it is to come. Barack Obama is the first black president.

Outline the steps that brought about the end of the system of apartheid in South Africa in the 1990s

An all white national party came into power in 1948 in South Africa creating apartheid. This separated the blacks and native South Africans from the whites. The “coloured” people were unable to marry outside their own race, travel where they liked, or choose where they lived—they didn’t have basic human rights.
In 1978, 30 years after the apartheid system started, Prime Minister P.W. Botha made some means of reform with the blacks allowing trade union meetings, marriage of whomever, and they were allowed to mix in certain places. Nelson Mandela, the leader of the A.N.C, gets sent to prison and becomes the face for the resistance movement that began calling for a revolution. In 1976 the small amount of black educated kids began to protest due to being educated in the whites native language--Afrikaans. Civil disobedience strikes and boycotts increased in the region. Trade unions won the right to bargain and protest the apartheid. With around 85% of South Africans being of colour the economy would have imploded. Nelson Mandela was eventually released from prison and was voted into power during the 1994 all race election.

What were the steps that Gandhi used in order to help India secure independence from Great Britain?

Mohandas Ghandi was the leader of the Indian congress Party who led a style of protest known as pacifism, which is a non-violent resistance.  He believed that Hindus and Muslims could share India together.  Amritsar occurred in 191 where many protesters took to the streets unarmed in the first independence protest. 379 protesters were killed and over 1000 wounded due to the British over reacting. The next step Ghandi took was to protest the tax Britain had put on salt. He marched 240miles with thousands of followers. This Salt March brought upon support for the independence movement across the world and throughout India.  Ghandi was arrested and put in prison. After this event the partition took place where British decided to end their involvement in India and create independence for the country. They split the country into two parts Pakistan for Muslim people and India for the Sikhs and Hindus. However due to the mass movement of the populations 500,000 people were killed.
